Vallarta – all the rage as a movie set in 2012!
The movie currently being filmed in Puerto Vallarta, I Brake for Gringos,
already in its sixth week of filming, is reported to be generating a whopping
$50 million pesos income for the region.
This statistic was recently released by the
Film Commissioner for Vallarta, Christian Gomez, when he highlighted the
importance of such promotion in the area. The output is an estimated $80
million pesos, of which 65% of that will stay right here in the region of Banderas Bay.
Most of us have seen the film crews on the
streets as last week they spend a few days at Strana Nightclub on the main avenue filming scenes involving well
known DJs and using a cast of over 200 extras. From there they moved the set to
our downtown Malecon. However, the most well known actors are still to arrive.
Teri Hatcher of Desperate Housewives
and Superman fame, who is playing the
lead´s (Logan’s) mother and his father, played by John Michael Higgins, the
star of Couple’s Retreat, are both
due to arrive shortly.
We are excitedly awaiting the release of
this movie in March 2013 and hope other producers will take note that Vallarta hasn’t lost it after all these
years; it is still a great movie location.

Euro 2012, so who’ll win it all?
It is that time again, once every four
years that the countries in Europe
go nutty over 11 men on a pitch with a football (of the round variety).
This European
Football championshimp is being hosted by Poland and Ukraine and has
received thousands of visitors to watch the games live in the countries’
stadiums. If you can’t make it over to east Europe for this event, there are
plenty of opportunities to watch it on the TV and scream aloud for your team.
Here in Puerto Vallarta, groups
of loyal Euro 2012 fans have been
gathering together at Outback Steakhouse, Espresso, El Torrito Sports Bar,
Champions and Benitto’s in the Marina.
Join
in the summer madness, select a team and cheer them on to the finals.
Promoting a green Puerto Vallarta
The Puerto Vallarta Garden Club teams up with the Botanical
Gardens and local businesses to promote a greener environment and a uniform
look to Vallarta’s trees.
Businesses along Olas Altas in old town Vallarta
were contacted by the PV Garden Club last week to sponsor planter boxes along
the sidewalks.
The idea is similar to the one already in place on “restaurant
row†Basilio Badillo, to create a uniform look to our main roads and to ensure
that flowers and plants have a place in Vallarta’s downtown.
Importantly the PV
Garden Club will be monitoring the growth and the maintenance of these
plants.
The Primavera trees have been
specially selected as they have thin roots so as not to damage any concrete
sidewalks or building structures near them. Next to these trees beautiful
bougainvillea has been planted, adding a touch of color to our streets.
Well done PV Garden Club, keep up the good
work!

New Italian kid on the block Pan y que?
Fancy a reasonably priced delicious fresh cooked Italian meal?
Well, I recently discovered you need look no further than Pan Y Que?
This relatively new restaurant is fast becoming an excellent dining alternative to more expensive Italian restaurants in downtown Vallarta.
Conveniently located behind Parque Hidalgo and the underground parking garage, Pan y Que? offers a wide selection of all the old favorites, pastas, pizzas, salads, Paninis and desserts, but it won’t break the bank.
My personal favorites are the cheese and Portobello mushroom starter, Pepperoni pizza and the blackberry cheesecake.
Also making the establishment popular are their excellent light and dark draft beers, cocktails and wines. 2 for 1 drink deals are offered throughout the week and are excellent value.
Good friendly unpretentious atmosphere, well worth a visit. Pan y Que can be found behind Parque Hidalgo on Peru 1002 tel. 2230500
Getting a Green Makeover
The Lazaro Cardenas Park in the Romantic Zone of Puerto Vallarta is getting a makeover, got green
fingers and time to spare?
A day in the Park, on Saturday, June 16th hosted
by the PV Garden Club and a team of local volunteers will be a fun event to
help replant trees and flowers in Lazaro Cardenas Park.
The Garden Club has
created a Committee for the park to oversee the planting and the installation
of a new water system, trash bins and increase security.
If you have a penchant
for things green and would like to help this worthy cause, make sure to be at
the park next Saturday. Bring gloves, a bucket or a shovel if you have them
handy, sunscreen and a hat!
The event will raise awareness for keeping the park
clean and enjoyable for all who use it.
Music, food and entertainment is also
set to bring in the crowds, don’t miss it!

Mama Rosa – a traditional delight
Located right in the heart of the most picturesque area of Puerto Vallarta,
El Centro, and only a few steps from Café Des Artistes, Si Señor and Pipi’s is
this charming small, locally run and owned restaurant Mama Rosa, true testament to local Mexican cuisine.
This weekend I visited the Sunday buffet breakfast (an everyday
affair here, open from 8am to 1.30pm for the late risers) and remembered why I
love the place so much.
Listening to the
church bells and the gentle trickle of water from the fountain in the courtyard
while soft Mexican music played in the background, I certainly was able to
disconnect from my busy life for a while.
The warm buffet is a real treat, with traditional offerings
such as Menudo, handmade tortillas, enchiladas, chilaquilles, meat, vegetables,
eggs, potatoes, salsas, fresh juices, home made desserts and a fresh fruit
selection. You’ll be spoiled for choice and it is impossible to have just one
plate full, you always want to go back for more!
Extremely affordable, charming and delicious every time.
Glad I went back and will keep doing so. Although the dinners have stopped for
the low season (they start again in October) they are also well worth a visit.

What is it about Selva Romantica that makes it so special?
Selva Romantica is an anomaly in the old town Puerto Vallarta Real Estate Market.
Selva
stands out by being one of very few buildings with almost a 90% vacation rental
occupancy rate and having one of the highest prices per m2 in the bay.
With
studio units selling in the mid 200k range, 1 bedrooms from $280 to $325k and 2
bedrooms over $450k, there seems to be no economic downturn for Selva
Romantica!
And why is it so popular? Many owners have stated the charm and
warmth of traditional Mexican architecture lured them in and helps to maintain
a sense of their location.
Built on the hillside but still very much in the
heart of old town, Selva uses wood accents, tile and natural brick facades –
The added bonus of manicured gardens and a superb roof top pool area
overlooking the bay is an additional draw.
So, when in Mexico, it seems buyers
want to really feel like they are here!

Architect Manuel Morales shows his flair in Amapas 353
New, sleek finishes
near the beach in Old Town Puerto
Vallarta? Usually an oxymoron but not anymore…
Just steps from Los Muertos Beach and the Blue Chairs
Resort, this architectural newcomer Amapas
353 is steadily making its mark on the landscape.
The structure of six
levels of condos for sale and the rooftop pool area is
almost complete and work has begun in earnest on the interiors. The model is
set to be ready for display in June 2012.
Architect Morales’
focus is to keep the ocean views as wide as possible. His ingenious use of
space in a very difficult shaped piece of land has been really apparent in the
floor plans. The 21 units are all positioned to give views of the ocean and
each one has a storage space (also a rare commodity in old town). The building
has elevator access to all levels and 2 pedestrian entrances from Amapas Street on the beach side to the
main road to Mismaloya.
Being surrounded by
older buildings, some dating back 30 years that have difficult access and many
stairs, this project is a welcome addition to the neighborhood long tainted by
cobbles, steps and more steps!
Finally people with
limited mobility will be able to live or rent in this sought after location and
can breathe a sigh of relief!
