Tropical Fruits in Banderas Bay
By DevSupport on April 2, 2013
One of the little luxuries that I love is
coming home to find my refrigerator filled with tropical fruits that have been thoughtfully cut and put into
Tupperware by my housekeeper. I’m not
even sure that she knows what a huge treat it is for an expat from cold Canada
to have all those exotic fruits just
waiting, but I’m defiantly appreciative.
Whether you’re shopping at Farmer’s Markets in Puerto Vallarta, La Cruz or Nuevo Vallarta,
purchasing fruit from the trucks of farmers driving through your neighborhood
or at the local grocery store, there is a huge variety available year-round at
extremely inexpensive prices.
Some common
locally grown fruits in the Puerto Vallarta region include: pineapple, mango, yucca, guava, lychee,
coconut, melons, prickly pears, bananas, passion fruit, avocado and
papaya. There are also many other exotic fruits grown in neighboring
states and often found in our grocery stores like pomegranate, star fruit,
sapodilla, and soursop.
These tropical
fruits are all ideal for eating on their own or using in a smoothie or licuado as they are called in Mexico.
You will also find them in used in sorbets, agua frescas, salsas, salads and desserts, and experimenting with
these exotic fruits, particularly
the ones not often found in other countries, is a great way to get the flavor
of Mexico.
